Watching the Sun Rise over Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Angkor is located in Cambodia's northern province of Siem Reap. Angkor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains the famous temples of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Bayon.
The temples were lost in the jungle for 600 years until the French explorer Henri Mahout discovered them in 1860.
Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and is a symbol of Cambodia appearing on the national flag. Angkor Wat meaning "City of Temples" was originally built as a Hindu temple in the 12th Century but during the 13th century became a Wat and changed to being predominately Buddhist. Built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II as his State Capital the temple complex showcases the classic architecture of the Khmer Empire.
The temples are best seen in the golden light of early morning and a popular spot is by the north pool as the sun uncovers and illuminates the beautiful complex.

The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the "new" seven wonders of the World.
The Great Wall measures approximately 8,850 km and stretches from East to West across China. Made up of many fortifications the Wall winds like a great dragon over mountains, desserts and grasslands.
The Great Wall was first constructed in 220 BC by the ruthless tyrant Qin Shihuangdi. There had been earlier defensive walls built but this now joined them all together as one great barrier. It is thought that it took 300,000 people about 10 years to build.
The majority of the Wall that can still be seen today was built and renovated during the Ming Dynasty between 1368 and 1644.

Petra, Jordan
Petra "Rose City" is a city half built and half carved into the pinky/red sandstone mountains in Jordan over 2000 years ago. Created by the Nabataeans who settled there it was an important trade link for silks and spice between Asia, Europe and the Middle East. After the city was finally deserted it lay hidden in the desert for 300 years and was unknown to the Western world until 1812.
Visiting Petra is an awe-inspiring experience. First of all the only entrance to the city is through the Sig. This narrow gorge was created by thousands of years of flash floods forming a pathway through the rock. It is over 1km in length and in some places the walls are up to 100 meters tall.
When you reach the final corner of the sig you will get your first glimpse of the amazing grandeur of the Treasury, Al-Khanzneh (see picture). Don't miss the large urn at the top of the treasury, the legend is that this contains King Solomon's lost treasure. You can see the bullet marks on the urn from the Bedouin travelers that have tried over the years to see if this was true.
After the Treasury you will enter The Street of Facades. All the facades still standing in Petra are tombs as all the Nabataean dwellings have disappeared over time. This is just the start of the archaelogical wonders you will see in Petra. Take a few days to explore the hundreds of tombs carved into the rock, as well as Roman Theater, Royal Tombs and the Monastery. But be prepared, take plenty of water and wear sensible clothing and footwear.
